How to Combat Acne When You’re Pregnant

Mothers Work, Inc.

You may have heard horror stories about women who had clear skin up until the day they became pregnant and BAM - suddenly, their once beautiful complexion turned into an acne-scarred mess.

While this particular scenario is rare, pregnancy can affect your skin and make you more prone to acne or even make existing acne worse. If you experience pregnancy acne, don’t fret!

There are a number of simple tips you can utilize to help restore your complexion back to its youthful, healthy glow. While you cannot necessarily prevent pregnancy acne, there are a number of ways to combat acne when you are pregnant.

First and foremost, DO NOT SCRUB! Scrubbing your face will only irritate your skin and make existing acne worse. Instead, wash your face daily with a gentle face wash and use an oil-free moisturizer if your skin is dry.

Afterwards, pat (don’t rub!) your skin dry. If you wear makeup during your pregnancy and have problems with pregnancy acne, make sure any cosmetics you use are water based, not oil based. This will help prevent additional acne from forming.

Finally, it’s very important to speak with your doctor before using any over the counter or prescription acne medications. If your pregnancy acne is quite severe, you may need to see a dermatologist and see what he recommends. Whatever you do, do NOT use an acne product without first speaking with your medical physician, as most acne products have not been tested by pregnant women.

While you cannot prevent pregnancy acne from occurring most of the time, you can safely and effectively combat acne when you’re pregnant by following the above tips. Here’s to clear skin!
