Choosing to Be a Stay at Home Parent

Choosing to be a stay at home parent can be a life altering decision. There are a lot of rewards to being a stay at home parent, but it’s also important to consider the potential downfalls as well.
A lot of new parents are under the misconception that staying at home with the baby will be easy.
Think again!
While choosing to be a stay at home parent can be rewarding and allow you to experience every moment of your child’s life, there are a lot of important things to consider before making the decision to stay at home. For example, can your family survive on only one paycheck?
If you can, you’ve already considered the financial impact of surviving on one parent’s income alone. That’s a great step, but you also need to think about your emotional and mental well being, the well being of your child, and the ramifications of giving up your job to take care of your child.
If you do choose to stay home, it’s important to take time to continually strengthen your bond with your partner. A stay at home parent might find themselves feeling angry or even resentful towards their significant other as they leave to go to work for 8 hours a day and you’re stuck cleaning up messes, changing diapers and feeding a hungry baby.
However, taking a few minutes each day to bond with your partner and talk about that day’s activities will ensure both of you are strengthening your relationship with each other.
Keep in mind that while a lot of days will be very stressful for a stay at home parent, you will usually be the first person to witness new things that happen in your baby’s life. For example, you will probably be the first person to hear your baby’s first word, witness them walking for the first time and a host of other joyful experiences.
With days like that, it’s easy to forget how stressful choosing to be a stay at home parent can be. However, being a stay at home parent is a constant battle of give and take. Some days will be easy and others won’t be, but if you believe you are doing what’s best for your family then you will be able to take everything in stride!
