Picking the Perfect Name for Your Baby

Mothers Work, Inc.

When it’s time for you and your partner to decide on the perfect name for your baby, it can feel like an overwhelming task. There are so many names to choose from!

Picking the perfect name for your baby doesn’t have to be as difficult as you might expect. Knowing where to begin - and how to fend off well-meaning suggestions from family and friends - will make choosing the right name for your baby a much simpler task.

First and foremost you and your partner should start discussing names the two of you mutually like. Keep a list of favorite baby names so you have a handy guide to reference and add to when new names pop up.

Think about how your baby’s name will sound when it’s spoken aloud. Does it fit well with your last name? Are there any potentially embarrassing nicknames children will be able to come up with for your child when he’s in school?

These are all things that should be considered before deciding on a name for your baby. You may also want to consider how unique your child’s name will be and whether you prefer to name your baby after a close relative. Many parents choose to do this, but it’s up to you whether you like the name enough to brand your child with it for the rest of his life!

Honestly, there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to picking the perfect name for your baby. Ultimately, the only criteria for choosing the perfect name is how well you and your partner like it. The preceding guidelines are available to help give you ideas about a name for your child.

If you and your partner like a given name, THAT is truly the perfect name for your baby.

How to Soothe a Crying Baby

Mothers Work, Inc.

Babies cry. While a new parent can easily become overwhelmed by incessant crying, it’s important to understand the reasons behind why your baby might be crying and what you can do to soothe her.

It’s understandable to worry about your baby if you can’t tell why she’s crying. However, once you learn through trial and error what you baby needs and wants when she cries, it’ll be easier to help calm her down!

The following list will help you figure out what your baby wants and will guide you through fulfilling her needs and soothing her.

Hunger

Hungry babies can cry. While immediately feeding a crying infant will not necessarily soothe her, if she’s hungry she will continue to eat until her stomach’s full. Eventually, you can help her drift off into sleep. Eventually, you’ll be able to tell when your baby’s hungry before she starts screaming at the top of her lungs by reading the signs she’s ready for a meal!

Uncomfortable

There’s a reason infants and newborns are bundled up - they liked to be kept comfortable and warm! Your baby will often cry if she is exposed to the elements, like when you are changing her diaper or dressing her for the day.

You’ll quickly get into the routine of changing your baby as rapidly as possible before she has a chance to cry. Just make sure your baby isn’t too cold or too warm so she can be as comfortable - and tear-free - as possible!

Diaper Change

Oftentimes, babies will cry when they need a new diaper. However, it’s not uncommon for parents to find their child needs a diaper change but never made a sound!

This is the easiest problem to check and the quickest to remedy.

Attention

Babies need a lot of love and attention during these first few months of their life. Oftentimes, your baby will cry simply because she wants to be held! If this is the case, she should almost immediately stop crying when you pick her up and cuddle her against you.

Use a baby sling to make transporting your little one around easy and convenient for you. That way you can still get things done, but your baby is right there with you enjoying the attention.

While there are undoubtedly times when you won’t be able to figure out why your baby is crying, these are some of the most common reasons your newborn suddenly turned into a crying mess!

If all else fails, don’t panic. Sometimes, babies cry - and no amount of soothing her will seem to help. Learn to read your babies signs when she’s hungry, needs a diaper change or just wants to be held and you will be able to soothe your crying infant without a problem.
